Garbage disposal installation is not as hard as most people think. In fact, a person with a bit of know-how when it comes to electrical installations can easily learn how to install the device through careful perusal of its manual. Of course, for those who have absolutely no idea about wirings and tools, it might be necessary to call for help just to be on the safe side. That being said, following are the steps on how to install a garbage disposal system.
Cut the Power Off
Regardless of whether one is installing a new garbage disposal or simply replacing an existing one, it is always important to cut the power off from where the device is plugged in. This ensures that no accidents will happen during the course of garbage disposal installation.
Disconnecting the Waste Assembly
Make sure to have a bucket and some towards on hand before starting this step. Simply disconnect the waste assembly starting from the sink flange to the trap while keeping the bucket directly at the bottom. This will catch any water and waste materials that might fall on the floor. Now there should be one gaping hole on the bottom of the sink.
Clean it up
Before attaching the mounting assembly to the sink flange, make sure to clean up the sealant that may be stuck around the material. This will make installation better and ensure that the garbage disposal would be able to function perfectly.
Attaching Mounting Assembly to Sink Flange
One clean up is done; start connecting the mounting assembly to the sink flange. Carefully insert the ring over the flange but make sure that the flange is in proper position first. Make sure to check out the manual to find out proper gasket replacement. Tighten the screws as much as possible to ensure that the material stays on.
Garbage Disposal and Mounting Assembly
Prior to installing the garbage disposal, check out the P-trap to see if there are any remnants that should be removed. The dishwasher drain connection must also be prepared beforehand since this would be difficult after the disposal is actually attached to the mounting assembly. Next up, start connecting the disposal to the assembly, making sure that the mounting tabs fit perfectly below the mounting tracks. The lower mounting ring should be able to lock with the mounting tabs when rotated using a wrench or any tool appropriate.
The discharge tube of the disposal must be aligned with the drain trap.
Power On
Lastly, connect the unit to a power source and try it out. However, for beginners, it is recommended that they ask the help of a licensed electrician for the procedure to ensure safety.
All in all, garbage disposal installation takes time and patience but not really as complicated as most people think. The fact is that the process only requires careful perusal of the specific manual before a person can start attempting the project. Keep in mind that since there are different models of garbage disposal, installation methods may vary.
